  • Mont Saint-Michel (2002) — Commodore, standard outside and inside cabins, wheelchair-accessible, reserved lounge seats

Do You Need a Cabin on the Portsmouth to Caen Ferry?

On the overnight 23:00 sailing, yes — a cabin, Couchette Plus berth, or reserved lounge seat is compulsory. You cannot board the overnight crossing without booking one. The car deck is sealed once the ship sails and you cannot return to your vehicle for the duration of the crossing.

On daytime sailings (08:00 and 15:00 departures), a cabin is not required — you are free to use the lounges, restaurants and deck areas throughout. However, cabins are available at a reduced daytime rate on all day crossings. If you want privacy, a rest, or simply somewhere quiet to sit, a day cabin is worth considering. For those who suffer from seasickness, lying flat in a private cabin is considerably more effective than sitting upright in a shared lounge.

💡 Your overnight accommodation options: On the Guillaume de Normandie, the budget option is a Couchette Plus berth — a shared sleeping area with individual blackout curtains, privacy screens and access to a dedicated lounge, priced from £12. On the Mont Saint-Michel, the equivalent is a reserved lounge seat from £10 — a reclining chair in a dedicated lounge. Neither offers the privacy of a full cabin, but both are a genuine option for solo budget travellers. For families, couples or anyone wanting a proper sleep, a private cabin is a significantly better experience.

Why a Cabin Makes the Crossing

The overnight Portsmouth to Caen sailing is approximately 7 hours 30 minutes. That is a long time to be on a ship without a private space. A Couchette Plus berth or reserved seat will get you across, but a cabin is a genuinely different experience — and in our view, worth it for almost everyone travelling as a couple, family, or anyone valuing a proper night’s sleep.

🛁

Your own ensuite

Every private cabin on both ships has an ensuite shower room. Arriving in Caen or Portsmouth freshly showered makes a real difference — you step off the ship ready for the day rather than crumpled from a night in a reclining chair.

🛏️

A proper place to lie flat

Even if you are not planning to sleep, lying flat on a bunk is far more comfortable than a reclining seat for several hours. If the Channel is rough, lying down is also considerably better for motion sickness than sitting upright in a lounge.

🔋

Charge up & store bags

Your cabin has sockets for charging phones, tablets and laptops — so you arrive in France with full batteries. It also gives you a private space to store bags, get changed, and have some quiet time. On the Guillaume de Normandie, UK 3-pin, European and USB A+C sockets are all provided — no adaptor needed.

👨‍👩‍👧

Ideal for families

A cabin is a genuine asset with children. Put them to bed in their bunk, watch something on Video on Demand, and let them sleep through the Channel. Kids love the bunk beds — for many it is one of the highlights of the trip. A 4-berth cabin with four people is exceptional value per head.

💡 Your cabin is a base — not a prison

Booking a cabin does not mean spending the whole crossing in it. The Riva Bella brasserie, Le Jardin self-service restaurant and the Les Planches bar are all available to every passenger regardless of cabin grade. The cabin is your home base — somewhere to sleep, shower and store your bags. You can have dinner, watch the lights of the coast disappear from the deck, have a drink at the bar, then retreat to your cabin when you are ready. It is a far more relaxed way to cross than being anchored to a shared lounge seat for the entire night.

The Two Ships — Guillaume de Normandie vs Mont Saint-Michel

Which ship you sail on depends on which sailing you book — the ship is confirmed in your booking details. There are meaningful differences between the two, particularly when it comes to cabin facilities, socket types and specialist accommodation.

🚢 Guillaume de Normandie (launched April 2025)

Brittany Ferries’ newest ship — a hybrid-LNG cruise ferry that replaced the beloved Normandie on this route. 386 cabins including a wider range of specialist grades than any other ship on the route. Named after William the Conqueror, who is buried in Caen.

  • Commodore with private terrace, queen bed, Phytomer toiletries
  • Club cabins (2-berth outside, standard and allergy-friendly)
  • Allergy-friendly cabins across multiple grades
  • Pet-friendly 4-berth outside and inside cabins
  • Wheelchair accessible 2-berth outside and inside
  • Couchette Plus shared berths (with lounge access)
  • Video on Demand in all cabin types
  • UK, European and USB A+C sockets — no adaptor needed
  • Wi-Fi packages available throughout

Full Guillaume de Normandie guide & deck plan →

🚢 Mont Saint-Michel (launched December 2002)

The veteran of the route, having sailed Portsmouth–Caen since December 2002 — over two decades of continuous service. 224 cabins across a smaller range of grades. Reliable and familiar, but a generation behind the Guillaume in facilities and cabin technology.

  • Commodore cabin (twin beds + sofabed, TV, DVD, minibar, breakfast)
  • 4-berth outside and inside standard cabins
  • 2-berth inside cabin
  • Wheelchair accessible 2-berth inside and outside
  • Reserved lounge seats (419 available)
  • TV and DVD player on Commodore only
  • Continental 2-pin sockets only — UK travel adaptor required
  • No allergy-friendly cabins
  • No pet-friendly cabins
  • No Couchette Plus

Full Mont Saint-Michel guide & deck plan →

⚠️ Important: Specialist cabins — Commodore, pet-friendly, allergy-friendly, wheelchair-accessible and Couchette Plus — are only available on the Guillaume de Normandie. If any of these matter to you, confirm your sailing operates on that ship before booking. Your booking confirmation shows which ship you are on. To request a specific cabin location or deck number, call Brittany Ferries on 0330 159 7000 (Mon–Fri 09:00–18:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–16:30).

Cabin Prices — Both Ships at a Glance

Prices below are from-prices sourced directly from Brittany Ferries. What you actually pay depends on date, season and demand. Day sailing prices are lower; peak summer (July–August) and weekend sailings cost significantly more. The earlier you book, the lower the price and the wider your choice of cabin grade.

💡 One important note: The Couchette Plus (Guillaume) and reserved lounge seats (Mont Saint-Michel) are the only accommodation where the day and night price is the same (£12 and £10 respectively). All cabin prices are dynamic — the same cabin can cost considerably more in August than it does in January.

💡 Tips for the best cabin price

  • Book as early as possible — prices are lowest when availability first opens, up to 12 months ahead
  • Travel mid-week (Sunday to Thursday) rather than Fridays and Saturdays
  • Avoid school holidays if you have flexibility — April, May, September and October offer better value
  • A 4-berth cabin split between four people is often significantly cheaper per head than two 2-berth cabins
  • Day sailings carry reduced cabin rates — a good option if you want privacy without the overnight premium

Guillaume de Normandie — Complete Cabin Guide

All Guillaume de Normandie cabins are ensuite, air-conditioned, and include fresh bed linen, one medium towel per berth, soap and shower gel. A unique advantage over older ships: all cabins are fitted with UK 3-pin, European 2-pin and USB A+C sockets — British passengers need no travel adaptor. Wi-Fi is available via paid packages throughout the ship. Video on Demand is included in every cabin grade.

⚠️ Pet cabin rules — fines apply: Pets must remain in a designated pet-friendly cabin or the onboard kennels at all times. Taking a pet into a non-pet-friendly cabin incurs a deep cleaning charge of €193.68, rising to €387.36 for repeat offences. Failing to muzzle a dog in the exercise area incurs a €200 fine (€400 repeat). Guide dogs are exempt.

Both wheelchair-accessible cabins are 13.2m² — larger than standard cabins to allow wheelchair movement. Availability is limited and wheelchair users are given priority. Non-wheelchair passengers may be asked to move to an alternative cabin. Book as early as possible and contact Brittany Ferries directly on 0330 159 7000.

🛏️ Couchette Plus — Guillaume de Normandie

Couchette Plus is a unique option on the Guillaume de Normandie — not a private cabin but a step up from a standard reserved seat. Each berth is in a grouping of four, with an individual blackout curtain providing privacy and air conditioning as standard. Privacy and noise-dampening curtains separate the berths. All Couchette Plus passengers have access to a dedicated communal lounge — an exclusive space separate from the general passenger areas. Priced from £12 per berth (day or night), this is the most affordable overnight option on the Guillaume de Normandie. Two wheelchair-accessible Couchette Plus berths are available, accessible by lift.

Note: Couchette Plus is not available on the Mont Saint-Michel. If you are on the Mont Saint-Michel and want a budget overnight option, reserved lounge seats from £10 are the equivalent.

Which Cabin Should You Book?

The overnight sailing departs Portsmouth at 23:00 and arrives in Caen from 06:45 — so most of the crossing is spent asleep. Here is honest guidance by party type:

👫 Couples

Best pick: On the Guillaume de Normandie, the 2-berth Outside Club cabin gives twin beds, a sea view, VOD and a modern crossing experience from £130 overnight. For a special occasion, the 2-berth Commodore (from £157) with its private terrace is the finest cabin on the route. On the Mont Saint-Michel, the 2-berth Inside is the most affordable private option from £44 overnight.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families (3–4 people)

Best pick: 4-berth Outside cabin on the Guillaume de Normandie (from £88 overnight) — bunk beds children love, a porthole view, VOD and no adaptor needed. The allergy-friendly version is the same price and worth choosing if anyone in the party has sensitivities. On the Mont Saint-Michel, the 4-berth Outside from £71 is comfortable and practical.

💼 Solo Travellers

Best pick: Couchette Plus on the Guillaume de Normandie (from £12) is the most affordable option and offers more privacy than a standard lounge seat — your own berth with a blackout curtain and access to the Couchette Plus lounge. On the Mont Saint-Michel, the reserved lounge seat (£10) is the equivalent. For more comfort, the 2-berth Inside cabin on either ship gives you a private ensuite space.

🐾 Travelling with Pets

Must sail on Guillaume de Normandie. Pet-friendly cabins are not available on the Mont Saint-Michel. Book the 4-berth Outside pet cabin (from £110 overnight) for a family with a pet and window — or the inside pet cabin (from £100) for a slightly cheaper option. Book at least 3 months ahead for peak season. Check in 90 minutes before departure. Full pet travel guide →

🌿 Allergy Sufferers

Must sail on Guillaume de Normandie. Allergy-friendly cabins are a unique feature of this ship. Options include the 2-berth Outside Club allergy-friendly (from £120 overnight), 4-berth Outside allergy-friendly (from £88) and 4-berth Inside allergy-friendly (from £77). All feature vinyl flooring, clean sea air ventilation, adapted curtains and allergen-sensitive toiletries.

♿ Reduced Mobility Passengers

Available on both ships. Guillaume de Normandie has wheelchair-accessible 2-berth outside (from £65 overnight) and inside (from £55 overnight). Mont Saint-Michel has wheelchair-accessible 2-berth inside (from £44) and outside (from £50), both with alarm and telephone. Two wheelchair-accessible Couchette Plus berths are also available on the Guillaume. Book early and call Brittany Ferries on 0330 159 7000. Accessible travel guide →

👶 Travelling with a Baby

Available on both ships. Cots for infants up to 24 months can be pre-booked in any cabin grade on either ship. Select that an infant is travelling at the start of booking — the cot option appears at step 4. The cot will be made up and waiting. Maximum one cot per cabin. An undersheet is provided; bring your own blankets. Cot dimensions: 110cm long, 77cm base, 60cm mattress width, 65cm tall.

⏳ How far ahead should you book? Commodore cabins, pet-friendly cabins and allergy-friendly cabins on the Guillaume de Normandie are the first to sell out — particularly on overnight summer sailings. Book at least 3 months ahead for July and August, and 6–8 weeks ahead for shoulder season. Brittany Ferries opens bookings up to 12 months in advance. Standard inside cabins have more availability but still fill during school holidays.

Essential Practical Notes

🔑 Your Cabin Key

Your boarding card is your cabin key — collected at check-in. The cabin number is at the bottom; the first digit shows which deck your cabin is on. One key per passenger. Foot passengers need it to board. Lost it? Take your travel documents to the information desk.

⏰ When to Vacate

Vacate your cabin 30 minutes before the ship arrives in port. An alarm is played in all cabins approximately one hour before arrival — the wake-up music is Dihun – Le Réveil by Carlos Núñez from his Celtic Sea album. Leaving on time keeps disembarkation running smoothly for everyone.

🔌 Plug Sockets — Key Difference

Guillaume de Normandie: UK 3-pin, European 2-pin and USB A+C sockets in all cabins — no adaptor needed. Mont Saint-Michel: continental 2-pin (220v) and 110v shaving socket only — UK passengers need a travel adaptor. Pack one to be safe; the onboard boutique may have them but stock is limited.

🛁 Towels & Bedding

One medium towel per berth in every cabin on both ships. Bedding changed before every departure. Soap and shower gel in all cabins. Luxury Phytomer toiletries in the Guillaume’s Commodore. The Guillaume has allergen-free and fragrance-free toiletries in all cabin grades.

🧳 What to Bring to Your Cabin

Leave heavy luggage in your car — there is no luggage handling service. Bring what you need for the night: toiletries, nightwear, phone charger, travel adaptor (Mont Saint-Michel), travel documents, medication. Once the ship sails, the car deck is sealed until disembarkation.

🌊 Rough Weather

The English Channel can be choppy in autumn and winter. Mid-ship cabins on middle decks experience least movement. If anyone is prone to seasickness, lying flat in your cabin with air conditioning on is significantly better than sitting upright in a shared lounge. Take medication before departure, not after symptoms begin.

🗺️ Where to Find Deck Plans

Full deck plans for both ships are in our dedicated ship guides. These show cabin locations by deck, facilities, and what to expect on board. Guillaume de Normandie deck plan →  |  Mont Saint-Michel deck plan →

🚭 Smoking & Vaping

All enclosed areas of both ships — including all cabins — are strictly non-smoking. Vaping and e-cigarettes are also prohibited indoors. Smoking is permitted on outdoor decks only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a cabin on the Portsmouth to Caen ferry?

On the overnight 23:00 sailing, yes — a cabin, Couchette Plus berth or reserved lounge seat is compulsory. You cannot board the overnight crossing without booking one, and the car deck is sealed once the ship sails. On daytime sailings (08:00 and 15:00 departures), no accommodation is required, though cabins are available at a reduced daytime rate for those who want privacy or a rest.

What is the difference between a Couchette Plus and a reserved lounge seat?

Both are shared (non-private) overnight options. Couchette Plus is available on the Guillaume de Normandie and consists of individual berths in a group of four, each with a blackout curtain and access to a dedicated Couchette Plus communal lounge — priced from £12. Reserved lounge seats are available on the Mont Saint-Michel: recliner chairs in a shared lounge, priced from £10. You can purchase sleep packs (pillow, blanket, eye mask, earplugs) and shower packs on board for either option. Neither is equivalent to a private cabin in terms of comfort.

What is a Commodore cabin on the Portsmouth to Caen ferry?

On the Guillaume de Normandie, the Commodore is a 2-berth cabin with a private terrace, queen-size bed, Phytomer toiletries, Video on Demand, Wi-Fi, minibar, tea and coffee, hair dryer, desk, and continental breakfast on overnight sailings. It is 14.3m² — the largest and most luxurious cabin on the route. From £55 day / £157 overnight. On the Mont Saint-Michel, the Commodore is a larger cabin with twin beds and sofabed, TV and DVD player, minibar, hair dryer, macaroons, and breakfast overnight — but without a private terrace. From £74 day / £135 overnight.

Do I need a travel adaptor for the ferry cabin?

It depends which ship you are on. The Guillaume de Normandie has UK 3-pin, European 2-pin and USB A+C sockets in all cabin grades — no adaptor is needed. The Mont Saint-Michel has continental 2-pin sockets (220v) and a 110v shaving socket only — UK passengers need a travel adaptor. Adaptors may be available to buy from the onboard boutique subject to stock, but pack your own to be certain.

Are there pet-friendly cabins on the Portsmouth to Caen ferry?

Yes — but only on the Guillaume de Normandie. Pet-friendly cabins and kennels are not available on the Mont Saint-Michel, pets must stay in your vehicle. The Guillaume has a 4-berth Outside pet cabin (from £110 overnight) and a 4-berth Inside pet cabin (from £100 overnight), both with vinyl flooring, space for an animal bed and access to the outdoor exercise area. Pets must stay in the designated pet-friendly cabin or kennels at all times. Taking a pet into a standard cabin incurs a €193.68 cleaning charge. Book at least 3 months ahead for peak season.

Are there allergy-friendly cabins on the Portsmouth to Caen ferry?

Yes — again, exclusively on the Guillaume de Normandie. The allergy-friendly cabins feature vinyl flooring, clean sea air ventilation (not recirculated air), adapted curtains and allergen and fragrance-free toiletries. Available grades include: 2-berth Outside Club allergy-friendly (from £120 overnight), 4-berth Outside allergy-friendly (from £88), and 4-berth Inside allergy-friendly (from £77). No allergy-friendly cabins exist on the Mont Saint-Michel.

Can I choose my cabin number or deck?

Brittany Ferries does not currently offer cabin or deck selection when booking online. If you have a preference — for example, a lower deck for stability in rough seas, or a specific location on the ship — contact Brittany Ferries directly after booking on 0330 159 7000 (Mon–Fri 09:00–18:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–16:30) and they may be able to accommodate your request subject to availability.

Are towels and bedding provided in all cabins?

Yes — one medium towel per berth is provided in every cabin on both ships. All berths have suitable bedding, changed before every departure. Soap and shower gel are included in all cabins. The Guillaume de Normandie provides allergen-free and fragrance-free toiletries across all cabin grades; the Commodore receives luxury Phytomer toiletries.

Where can I find the deck plans for the ships?

Full deck plans for both ships on the Portsmouth to Caen route are shown onboard each ship generally around stairs and lifts on each deck. They are also covered in our individual ship guides. These include cabin locations by deck, a breakdown of all passenger areas, and what to expect on board each vessel. Guillaume de Normandie ship guide→  |  Mont Saint-Michel ship guide→
