Portsmouth and Caen Travel Guide: Getting Here & Where to Go

This Portsmouth and Caen travel guide covers the two things you need to plan a crossing on this route: how to reach Portsmouth International Port from wherever you are in the UK, and where the Brittany Ferries sailing to Caen can take you once you arrive in Normandy. Portsmouth is the most convenient Channel ferry port for London, the South East and the Midlands — South Western Railway runs a direct service from London Waterloo in 1 hour 45 minutes. On the French side, Caen is a genuine rail and road hub with Paris two hours away by direct TER train and the whole of Normandy immediately ahead.

Getting to Portsmouth International Port

Portsmouth is well connected by road and rail from across the UK. It is the natural port for London, the South East and Southampton, but equally accessible from the Midlands, Wales and the North. Here are journey times and tips from the main regions that use this route.

📍 From London

London Waterloo → Portsmouth Harbour: 1h 45min direct (SWR)
Train frequency: Direct every 30 minutes
By car: ~2h via M3

South Western Railway terminates at Portsmouth Harbour station, with Portsmouth & Southsea also on the same line. Both stations are roughly half an hour’s walk from the port gate, or a short taxi ride — for foot passengers, a taxi is the more practical option than walking with luggage. For the overnight 23:00 sailing, a late-evening Waterloo departure fits perfectly. Driving south the evening before and staying near Gunwharf Quays is worth considering for early morning sailings.

📍 From the South East

Brighton: ~1h by car (A27) or train (Southern direct)
Guildford: ~55min by car (A3) | ~50min by train
Chichester: ~30min by car (A27) or train

Portsmouth is the natural port for the South East. The A27 coastal road, A3 from Surrey and direct Southern services from Brighton all make this an easy port to reach. No need to consider Dover or the Channel Tunnel for Normandy from this region.

📍 From Southampton

Southampton Central → Portsmouth Harbour: ~50min by train
By car: ~35min via M27
Note: No direct ferry from Southampton — crosses from Portsmouth

Southampton is the closest major UK city to Portsmouth port. The M27 by car and a direct train from Southampton Central both make the connection straightforward. A full guide to the Southampton to Caen journey is in the travel guides section below.

🚆 From the Midlands, Wales and the North

Birmingham: ~2h by car (M40 → M3) | ~2h 30min by train via London Waterloo  ·  Cardiff: ~2h 30min by car (M4 → M3) | ~2h 45min by train  ·  Bristol: ~2h by car (M4 → M3) | ~2h 15min by train  ·  Manchester: ~3h 30min by car (M6 → M40 → M3) | ~3h 45min by train via Waterloo

Midlands and northern travellers heading to Normandy or Paris are generally better served by Portsmouth than Plymouth. The overnight 23:00 sailing is the natural choice for longer journeys — drive to Portsmouth for the evening and board at 23:00, or take a train to Waterloo and connect to Portsmouth Harbour.
