Vehicle Dimensions & Prices 2026 — Portsmouth to Caen

Vehicle fares cover your vehicle and all passengers travelling in it. Cabin or Couchette Plus accommodation is priced separately on top — and is only compulsory on the overnight 23:00 sailing. On the 08:00 and 15:00 daytime crossings, it’s entirely optional. The crossing time on all three sailings is approximately 7 hours. Prices below are verified starting points for 2026 from the Brittany Ferries booking page — all fares are dynamic and rise with demand, season, and proximity to departure. For departure times and seasonal sailing patterns, see our ferry timetable guide →

+ Commodore cabin (both ships) MSM from £135 · GdN from £157 (+ private terrace, Phytomer toiletries, breakfast) £135+

💡 Cabin tip: Cabins are priced per cabin — not per person. Two or four people sharing costs the same as one person taking the same cabin solo. On the 23:00 overnight sailing, book early: 4-berth inside cabins from £77 (Guillaume de Normandie) and from £64 (Mont Saint Michel) fill quickly on peak sailings, as do Commodore and pet-friendly grades. See the full cabins guide →

⚠️ Measure accurately and declare all accessories: Rear bike racks, roof boxes, roof-mounted solar panels, satellite dishes, air conditioning units, and any other roof-mounted equipment all count toward your vehicle’s declared height and length. For caravans, measure the total combined length from the front bumper of your tow vehicle to the very rear of the caravan, including the drawbar. Undeclared accessories mean a surcharge at check-in — or, in some cases, an inability to load. When in doubt, call Brittany Ferries on 0330 159 7000 before booking.

🚐 Taking a Motorhome or Campervan to Caen

The Portsmouth to Caen motorhome crossing is one of the most practical ways to reach Normandy for self-contained travellers. Portsmouth has direct motorway links from London, the Midlands, and the South East, making it the natural departure point for motorhomers across central and southern England. Normandy itself rewards the motorhome traveller with excellent roads, a well-developed aire network, and iconic destinations — the D-Day coast begins within two kilometres of stepping off the ship at Ouistreham.

📐 Motorhome Size Limits

Brittany Ferries accept motorhomes and campervans up to 4 metres high and 9 metres long on this route. Most motorhomes fall well within 9m — but the 4m height ceiling includes everything fixed to the roof:

  • Solar panels and mounting frames
  • Satellite dishes and TV aerials
  • Roof-mounted bike racks and carriers
  • Air conditioning units
  • Roof storage pods or boxes

⚠️ Measure your actual overall travel height, not the manufacturer’s base vehicle spec. They are not the same.

🚫 You Cannot Stay in Your Motorhome

For safety reasons, you cannot remain in your motorhome during any crossing. The car deck is inaccessible to all passengers from the moment the ship sails until it arrives at the other end. On the 23:00 overnight sailing, all passengers must book overnight accommodation — a cabin or Couchette Plus berth (Guillaume de Normandie) or reserved lounge seat (Mont Saint Michel). On the 08:00 and 15:00 daytime crossings, no accommodation is required, but the car deck is still closed throughout.

Everything you need for the trip must come with you when you lock up — passports, medication, travel documents, valuables. Nothing can be retrieved once the car deck is sealed.

🅿️ Parking at Portsmouth & Near Ouistreham

Portsmouth (pre-departure): Motorhomes and caravans can park in the check-in lanes at Portsmouth International Port after midnight for early morning sailings, at your own risk — no port facilities are open overnight. Port Solent (approximately 5–10 minutes by road from the port) has a large free car park that motorhomers regularly use as a pre-departure stopover.

Near Ouistreham: The Aire de Camping-Cars de Ouistreham Riva-Bella is located close to the ferry terminal near the seafront. Hermanville-sur-Mer has a free aire with water approximately 4 miles from the port. Lion-sur-Mer (3 miles from the terminal) also permits overnight motorhome parking. Book or check current conditions at caenlamer-tourisme.com.

⚠️ Vehicle security at Ouistreham: The area around Ouistreham port has experienced incidents involving unauthorised attempts to access vehicles. Whether parked at or near the port, keep all windows closed and doors locked. Do not leave your motorhome unattended in the immediate port area overnight — the aires further from the terminal are generally quieter. This is practical advice widely shared in the motorhome community and worth taking seriously.

💡 Overnight bag for motorhomers: Your entire kitchen, wardrobe, and bed are packed away inside the motorhome — but you cannot access any of it during the crossing. Pack a dedicated bag before you leave home: passports, medication, phone charger, an outfit for the next day, and any valuables. Treat it exactly as you would carry-on luggage on a flight. The motorhome is the hold; it’s inaccessible in transit.

🏕️ Taking a Caravan to Caen

The Portsmouth to Caen caravan crossing puts you directly into Normandy with your home in tow. The Calvados coast, with its well-equipped campsites, D-Day heritage, cider-route countryside, and easy road network, is outstanding caravan territory — and the year-round nature of the Portsmouth to Caen route means you’re not limited to peak season travel. Here’s what caravan owners need to know before booking.

📐 Caravan Size Limits & How to Measure

Touring caravans are accepted up to 4 metres high and a total combined length of 9 metres — measured from the front bumper of your tow vehicle to the very back of the caravan, including the towbar and coupling:

  • Measure on your driveway before you book
  • Include the towbar, coupling, and any rear bike rack on the caravan
  • The 9m limit is the combined outfit — not just the caravan alone
  • Height includes any items stored on the caravan roof

⚠️ Always book as “car with caravan/trailer” from the outset — from +£46. Arriving without declaring a caravan risks a surcharge or being turned away.

🔐 On the Car Deck with a Caravan

Loading is directed by port staff and the ship’s loading officer — larger outfits take longer to position than solo cars. Key points once you’re parked:

  • Apply the caravan handbrake fully once positioned
  • Disable all alarms — both the tow vehicle and any caravan alarm
  • Note your deck number and the nearest exit — you’ll need these on arrival
  • Take everything you need with you; you cannot return during the crossing
  • Keep all caravan vents and roof lights closed

On arrival at Ouistreham, take your time — car deck exit ramps and the port exit require care with a full outfit in tow.

🇫🇷 Towing a Caravan in France from Caen

French speed limits for towing outfits are lower than standard car limits:

  • Motorway: 130 kph under 3.5t GTM — 90 kph if over 3.5t GTM
  • Dual carriageway: 110 kph / 90 kph (weight dependent)
  • Rural roads: 80 kph
  • Towns: 50 kph

The A13 from Ouistreham toward Paris is a tolled autoroute — outfits over 2m high typically fall into a higher toll class. See our Driving in France from Caen guide for full toll and caravan-specific speed limit details.

💡 Caravan booking tip: The check-in lanes at Portsmouth International Port have length markings on the ground — a useful check if you’ve not measured at home. Always book as “car with caravan/trailer” from the start of the booking process. Adding a caravan at the port is more expensive and on busy sailings there may simply not be space. On the overnight 23:00 sailing, the booking system requires accommodation to be selected before checkout — Couchette Plus, reserved seat, or cabin — so you cannot proceed without it.

⚠️ Your Bag — Pack It Before You Leave Home

This is the one thing first-time vehicle ferry passengers almost always wish someone had told them earlier: once you drive onto the car deck, you cannot go back. The car deck stays closed for the entire crossing on every sailing — day or night. Everything you need for the journey must be with you when you walk away from your vehicle. Pack this bag at home, not at the port.

🎒 What to Pack — Every Crossing

For overnight sailings: all of the below. For daytime sailings: at minimum the documents column — you still cannot access your vehicle mid-crossing.

📄 Documents — Always

  • All passports
  • Booking confirmation / boarding card
  • Vehicle, insurance and V5C documents
  • Pet AHC documentation if applicable

👕 Overnight Clothes

  • Comfortable sleep clothes or pyjamas
  • Outfit for your first day in Normandy
  • Clean socks and underwear
  • Light layer — ships can feel cool at night

🪥 Toiletries

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Any prescription medication
  • Seasickness tablets if needed — take before departure
  • Ear plugs for shared cabins

📱 Electronics

  • Phone and charger or power bank
  • Tablet, Kindle, or laptop if needed
  • Continental travel adaptor if sailing on Mont Saint Michel
  • Download content — turn mobile roaming off at sea

🥤 Snacks

  • Water bottle per person
  • Light snacks for the crossing
  • Children’s favourites and comfort food
  • Useful if the sea is rough

👶 Families

  • Children’s pyjamas and next-day clothes
  • Favourite toy or comfort item
  • Nappies and changing supplies
  • Any child medication required

💡 Wi-Fi and data: Switch mobile data roaming off before boarding — once offshore, your phone may connect to a maritime satellite network not covered by UK roaming allowances. Connect to the Brittany Ferries onboard Wi-Fi instead. Keep your cabin keycard well away from your phone — mobile phones demagnetise the magnetic strip. On Guillaume de Normandie, UK 3-pin, EU 2-pin, and USB A+C sockets are available in all cabins — no adaptor needed. On Mont Saint Michel, continental 2-pin only — pack a UK adaptor if sailing on Mont Saint Michel.

🔔 Vehicle Alarms & Battery Drain — Read Before You Travel

The car deck is an enclosed steel space. The ship pitches and vibrates throughout the English Channel crossing. If your vehicle alarm activates on the car deck, nobody can reach it. Crew cannot access your vehicle. You cannot return to the deck. A triggered alarm will drain your battery across a 7-hour crossing and causes considerable disruption to vehicles and passengers nearby. Brittany Ferries require all vehicle alarms to be disabled before you leave the deck — this covers cars, motorhomes, and any alarm fitted to a caravan.

🔕 How to Disable Your Alarm

Method varies by make and model. Common approaches:

  • Lock with the key in the door — on many cars, turning the key physically in the driver’s door lock disables the alarm, unlike using the fob
  • Double-press the key fob — some models lock without arming the alarm on a second press. Check your manual
  • Owner’s manual — most include a specific section on disabling the alarm for transport
  • Aftermarket alarms — ask the installer about a valet or transit mode before your trip
  • Caravan alarms — disable separately and independently from the tow vehicle

⚠️ Test this at home before your trip. Do not work it out for the first time in the queue at Portsmouth.

🔋 Battery Drain & Jump Starters

Even with the alarm off, an ageing battery can struggle on a 7-hour overnight crossing — especially if you leave a dashcam in parking mode or have other ongoing draws.

Pack a compact portable jump starter in your bag. Modern units fit in a coat pocket, start most vehicles multiple times, and cost from around £30–£50. If you step off the ship at Ouistreham at 06:45 with a flat battery, you are dealing with it yourself — assistance at the port is not guaranteed.

A jump starter also works as a USB power bank for charging devices during the crossing.

✅ Before You Leave Your Vehicle

  • Handbrake firmly applied
  • Vehicle alarm disabled and tested
  • Caravan alarm disabled if fitted
  • Engine off, keys in your bag or pocket
  • All windows fully closed
  • Dashcam parking mode switched off
  • Deck number and nearest exit noted
  • Overnight bag taken with you
  • Any loose roof-mounted items secure

⛔ The Car Deck Is Closed for the Entire Crossing — No Exceptions

On every sailing — 08:00, 15:00, and 23:00 — the car deck is sealed after loading and is completely inaccessible until the ship arrives at the other end. There are no exceptions. If your passport, medication, or anything else is in the vehicle, you cannot retrieve it. This is why packing your bag before you leave home is more than a good idea — it is essential.

Step-by-Step: Checking In at Portsmouth International Port

Follow Brittany Ferries signs from the M275 into Portsmouth — the port is at George Byng Way, Portsmouth PO2 8SP (what3words: ///fills.pods.navy). Vehicle passengers must check in at least 45 minutes before departure. If travelling with a pet, check in at least 90 minutes before departure — microchip scanning takes additional time and a shorter queue will not make up for arriving late. Check-in can open several hours before departure on some sailings.

1

Drive to the Vehicle Check-in Booths

Follow Brittany Ferries signs into Portsmouth International Port and proceed directly to the vehicle check-in booths. Have your booking reference and passports for all passengers ready before you reach the booth. If travelling with a pet, follow designated pet lanes. The check-in lanes at Portsmouth have painted length markings — a useful final check for caravan outfits. Dogs are NOT permitted inside the terminal building (assistance dogs excepted); there is a dog waste bin near the check-in kiosks. The nearest off-site dog walk is Alexandra Park, approximately 1.5 miles north of the port.

2

Collect Your Boarding Card

Passports are checked and returned along with a boarding card for each passenger. If you’ve booked a cabin, your boarding card is also the cabin key — the first digit of the cabin number indicates the deck. Keep boarding cards away from mobile phones and contactless cards, which can demagnetise the strip. Display the vehicle boarding card on your interior mirror as directed.

3

Use the Terminal If Time Allows

After check-in, subject to time available, you may leave your vehicle and use the terminal. Facilities include a café, toilets with baby changing, a bureau de change, and left luggage at the security desk (£10 per item, open 05:30–23:59). EV charging: two InstaVolt 50kW DC rapid charging stations are located opposite the terminal building; six more are in the multi-storey car park — contactless payment, no subscription required. Listen for any announcements to return to vehicles.

4

Security Check & Departure Lanes

When directed, proceed to the vehicle security check and then into the designated departure lanes. Remain with your vehicle. Random spot checks may take place. Keep all documents to hand and cooperate with border officials.

5

Loading onto the Car Deck

Port staff and the ship’s loading officer direct boarding. Motorhomes, campervans, and car-and-caravan outfits are typically guided to dedicated lanes — follow all directions carefully and drive slowly. Clearances are tight. Don’t be concerned if your lane moves more slowly than others; larger vehicles take longer to position. Guillaume de Normandie carries up to 470 vehicles; Mont Saint Michel up to around 800 — both are spacious car decks.

6

Secure Up, Disable Your Alarm, Head Up

Once parked, apply the handbrake firmly. Disable your vehicle alarm now — and any caravan alarm if applicable. Note your deck number and nearest exit door so you can find your vehicle when you arrive at Ouistreham. Take your bag, lock up, and follow signs to the lifts or stairs up to the passenger decks. On overnight sailings, music plays in cabins shortly before the hour as a wake-up call, followed by an announcement approximately one hour before arrival; a second announcement is then made at 30 minutes before docking when cabins must be vacated.

💡 Special requirements: If anyone in your party has needs that may affect their journey — wheelchair access, medical requirements, or assistance with boarding — contact Brittany Ferries at least 48 hours before departure on 0330 159 7000 (Mon–Fri 09:00–18:00, Sat–Sun 09:00–16:30).

Onboard — What to Expect

The Portsmouth to Caen car ferry is operated by Guillaume de Normandie (GdN) and Mont Saint Michel (MSM) — two distinct ships with meaningfully different facilities. Guillaume de Normandie translates as William of Normandy — William the Conqueror, who was born in Normandy, sailed to England in 1066, and is buried in Caen’s Abbaye aux Hommes. Which ship operates your sailing is confirmed in your booking.

Onboard Facilities Guide →

🍽️ Dining

GdN: Riva Bella brasserie (deck 7, classic French cuisine) and Le Jardin restaurant (deck 8, plant-focused menu with meat and plant-based options), plus Les Planches bar. MSM: Les Romantiques à la carte restaurant, La Galerie self-service restaurant, Le Café du Festival café, and Blue Note Bar. Both ships have a duty-free boutique opening shortly after departure — wine and tobacco not sold within UK territorial waters. Payment in sterling and euros accepted on both ships.

🛏️ Cabins

All cabins on both ships include ensuite bathroom, air conditioning, fresh bed linen, towels, soap and shower gel. Your boarding card is your cabin key. On overnight sailings, music plays in cabins shortly before the hour as a wake-up signal, followed by an announcement approximately one hour before arrival; a further announcement at 30 minutes before docking signals when cabins must be vacated.

Full Cabins Guide →

🔌 Sockets — Key Difference

GdN: UK 3-pin, EU 2-pin and USB A+C sockets in all cabins — no adaptor needed. MSM: continental 2-pin sockets only — UK passengers need a travel adaptor. Pack your own; boutique stock is limited. This is one of the most commonly missed practical differences between the two ships.

🎬 Entertainment

MSM has two cinemas (adults €9, children under 12 €7.50, family ticket 2+2 €30 for U/PG films, all in English). GdN has an Exhibition Gallery. Both ships have a duty-free boutique, bar areas, and deck access. The CClub Lounge day-access upgrade (£36 per person) is exclusive to GdN day sailings.

👨‍👩‍👧 Families

Children 4–15 travel at half the adult fare; under 4s travel free. Both ships have baby changing facilities. GdN has Video on Demand in all cabins. Infant cots can be pre-booked in cabins on both ships for children under 24 months (max one per cabin — select at the start of booking).

ℹ️ Information Desk

Available throughout the crossing on both ships. If you lose your boarding card/cabin key, take your travel documents to the desk. Pet-friendly cabins and kennels are available on GdN — not on MSM.

🐾 Travelling with a Pet in Your Vehicle — Day Sailings

If you are travelling with a pet in your vehicle on a Mont Saint Michel or Guillaume de Normandie daytime sailing (08:00 or 15:00), you can arrange a short supervised visit to your pet on the vehicle deck. Here’s how it works:

  • One person only is permitted on the vehicle deck at any time
  • Your visit is limited to 15 minutes maximum
  • You must present your passport or driving licence at the Information Desk to obtain a visit ticket — your ID is held securely while you are on the car deck and returned when you come back up
  • Arrange this at the Information Desk on boarding — do not attempt to access the car deck independently
  • This is a day-sailing-only arrangement — the car deck is sealed for the entire overnight crossing and no visits are possible

On Guillaume de Normandie, pets can also be accommodated in a dedicated pet-friendly cabin (with their owners), in the onboard kennels, or they can remain in your vehicle. On MSM overnight sailings, pets must stay in your vehicle for the entire crossing with no visit option. This is one of the most important reasons to check which ship operates your sailing before booking if you are travelling with a pet.

Full Pet Travel Guide →

💡 Alcohol and driving: France’s drink-drive limit is 0.05% BAC — lower than England and Wales (0.08%). You will be driving off the ship at Ouistreham within minutes of arriving. On the overnight 23:00 sailing you arrive at 06:45 or 07:30 French time and will be driving immediately. On the 15:00 daytime sailing you arrive around 22:00 French time. Plan your evening on board accordingly.

Arriving at Ouistreham — Disembarking with Your Vehicle

The overnight 23:00 sailing arrives at Ouistreham at either 06:45 or 07:30 French local time (Caen is one hour ahead of the UK). The 08:00 daytime departure from Portsmouth arrives around 15:00 French time; the 15:00 departure arrives around 22:00. All three sailings have an English Channel crossing time of approximately 7 hours. The port is Port de Ouistreham, 14150 — at the mouth of the Canal de Caen à la Mer, 15km north of Caen city centre. Disembarkation is orderly — there is no need to rush. Motorhome and caravan outfits especially should take their time on exit ramps and in the port area.

1

Vacate Your Cabin Before Arrival (Overnight Only)

On overnight sailings, music plays through the cabin speakers shortly before the hour as a gentle wake-up — this is your cue to start getting ready. An announcement follows approximately one hour before arrival confirming the arrival time, then a second announcement at 30 minutes before docking instructs passengers to vacate cabins. Take all belongings; you cannot return once you have left. On daytime sailings, a PA announcement is made when it is time to return to vehicles.

2

Wait for the Return-to-Vehicle Announcement

Wait in a lounge or outdoor area so you can clearly hear the car deck announcement. Crowding stairwells and lift lobbies before the announcement is called creates unnecessary congestion. On both ships, Priority Disembarkation passengers (£15 per vehicle, booked in advance) board to the car deck first. Note: Priority Disembarkation requires a check-in time of 1 hour 45 minutes before departure — not the standard 45 minutes — to guarantee your priority space.

3

Return to Your Vehicle — Passports Ready

Proceed to your deck when the announcement is made. Have passports out and ready — French border control (Police aux Frontières) takes place before exiting the terminal. If travelling with pets, your AHC and pet documentation should be accessible — the pet microchip sticker placed on your windscreen at Portsmouth check-in should remain in place throughout the voyage.

4

Drive Off — You Are Now in Normandy. Drive on the Right.

Do not start your engine until instructed. Once clear of the ship at Ouistreham, you are in France — drive on the right. Take it slowly leaving the port. No Crit’Air sticker is required for direct port access at Ouistreham — it is only needed if you are routing into Caen city centre or other regulated zones. EV charge points are located near the terminal (CCI Morlaix operated, €2 per charge, refill card required in advance). Twisto buses and Flixbus to Paris depart from near the terminal for any passengers without vehicles.

🇫🇷 Driving in France from Caen — What You Need to Know

Driving off the ship at Ouistreham puts you straight into Normandy — one of France’s most rewarding regions for a road trip. Sword Beach is within two kilometres of the port. Bayeux, with its cathedral and tapestry, is 30km west. Paris is 250km via the A13. But as a UK driver in France, several rules differ from home, and French police can issue and collect on-the-spot fines in euros. Here is a quick-reference overview — our dedicated guide covers everything in full detail.

📄 Documents to Carry

  • Valid passport — all passengers including children
  • Full UK photocard driving licence — old paper licences may require an International Driving Permit (IDP)
  • V5C vehicle registration document
  • Proof of insurance — many UK policies reverted to third-party only in the EU after Brexit; check your policy covers France fully
  • MOT certificate for vehicles over 3 years old
  • Pet AHC if travelling with animals

🚗 Required Equipment

  • Warning triangle — mandatory; place 30m behind vehicle if broken down
  • Hi-visibility vest — one per person, stored inside the cab (not the boot)
  • Headlight beam deflectors — UK right-hand drive headlights dip left and dazzle oncoming drivers; cheap sticker deflectors available from the onboard boutique
  • UK identifier sticker — “UK” oval or UK-flagged number plate. The old “GB” oval is invalid since September 2021
  • Crit’Air sticker — required to enter Caen city centre’s low-emission zone and 24 other French cities. Order from certificat-air.gouv.fr (~£4, allow 10 days)

  • Drink-drive limit: 0.05% BAC — below the UK’s 0.08%
  • Radar detectors and GPS speed camera alerts illegal — even switched off

Portsmouth to Caen Car Ferry — Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take a car on the Portsmouth to Caen ferry?

Yes — cars are the most common vehicle type on the Portsmouth to Caen car ferry. A car plus 2 passengers starts from £114 one way, with cabin or Couchette Plus accommodation booked separately on top for the overnight 23:00 sailing. Maximum dimensions are 2.60m high and 6m long. The 08:00 and 15:00 daytime sailings don’t require cabin accommodation, though it can be optionally booked. Check-in for vehicle passengers is 45 minutes before departure at Portsmouth International Port.

Prices & Booking Guide →

Can I take a motorhome on the Portsmouth to Caen ferry?

Yes. Motorhomes and campervans are fully accepted on both Guillaume de Normandie and Mont Saint Michel. Fares start from £176 including all passengers. The maximum dimensions are 4m high and 9m long — measured including everything fitted to the roof. You cannot stay in your motorhome during the crossing; on the 23:00 overnight sailing, all passengers must book cabin accommodation. On the 08:00 and 15:00 daytime crossings, accommodation is optional. Port Solent (~5 min from Portsmouth port) is a popular pre-departure motorhome overnight stop.

Motorhome & Campervan Guide →

Can I take a caravan on the Portsmouth to Caen ferry?

Yes. Touring caravans are accepted on both ships — book as “car with caravan/trailer” from the start, with a surcharge from +£46. Maximum dimensions are 4m high and 9m combined length (front of tow vehicle to the very rear of the caravan, including the towbar). Check-in lanes at Portsmouth have length markings on the ground. If booking the overnight 23:00 sailing, the Brittany Ferries booking system requires accommodation to be selected before checkout, so this is handled automatically.

Motorhome & Caravan Guide →

Do I need a cabin on the Portsmouth to Caen car ferry?

Only on the 23:00 overnight sailing — a cabin, Couchette Plus berth (Guillaume de Normandie), or reserved lounge seat (Mont Saint Michel) is compulsory for every passenger on that crossing. The car deck is sealed for the entire overnight journey. On the 08:00 and 15:00 daytime crossings, cabin accommodation is optional, though you still cannot access the car deck during the sailing.

Full Cabins Guide →

How early do vehicle passengers need to check in at Portsmouth?

Vehicle passengers should check in at least 45 minutes before departure. If travelling with a pet, allow 90 minutes — microchip scanning takes additional time. Foot passengers have a longer check-in requirement of 60 minutes. The port address is Portsmouth International Port, George Byng Way, PO2 8SP. Follow Brittany Ferries signs from the M275.

Portsmouth Port Guide →

Do I need to disable my car alarm before the Portsmouth to Caen crossing?

Yes — Brittany Ferries require all vehicle alarms to be disabled before you leave the car deck. If an alarm activates during the crossing, nobody can access the vehicle deck to stop it. Over a 7-hour overnight crossing, a triggered alarm will drain the battery completely. This applies to cars, motorhomes, campervans, and any alarm on a caravan. Test your alarm-disable method at home before your trip.

Do I need a Crit’Air sticker to drive from Ouistreham?

No Crit’Air sticker is needed for direct access to and from Ouistreham port. However, if you intend to drive through Caen city centre or other regulated low-emission zones — Caen, Rouen, and other Norman cities are introducing or expanding ZFEs — you will need one. Order from the official French government website at certificat-air.gouv.fr (~£4, allow 10 days for delivery to a UK address).

Driving in France from Caen Guide →

Does my UK car insurance cover me in France?

UK vehicle insurance usually includes EU travel, but the level of cover varies by policy — many UK comprehensive policies reverted to third-party only for EU travel after Brexit. Contact your insurer before you travel to confirm your cover in France. Motorhome and caravan owners should check specifically that their vehicle type and any towed outfit is included.

What is Priority Disembarkation and what check-in time does it need?

Priority Disembarkation (£15 per vehicle, booked in advance) gives you a priority parking space on the car deck so you are among the first vehicles to drive off on arrival. It is currently available on both the Guillaume de Normandie and Mont Saint Michel, expanding to further ships and vehicle types from 2 November 2026. Crucially, if you book Priority Disembarkation, you must check in 1 hour 45 minutes before departure — not the standard 45 minutes — to guarantee your priority space. It is not available to passengers travelling with pets, requiring special assistance, or with reduced mobility. Motorcycles are also excluded.

What is the difference between Guillaume de Normandie and Mont Saint Michel for vehicle passengers?

The key practical differences: Guillaume de Normandie has UK, EU and USB sockets in all cabins (no adaptor needed); Mont Saint Michel has continental 2-pin only. Guillaume de Normandie offers Couchette Plus berths from £12, allergy-friendly cabins, and 21 pet-friendly cabins with kennels. Mont Saint Michel offers reserved lounge seats from £10 and two cinemas. Both ships take all vehicle types including motorhomes and caravans. Check your booking confirmation for which ship operates your sailing.
