About the Mont Saint Michel Ferry

The Mont Saint Michel takes her name from the spectacular fortified island on the Normandy-Brittany border โ€” one of France’s most visited landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Her interiors carry echoes of this heritage through the design of her public spaces, and her reputation for comfort, stability and onboard hospitality has made her a firm favourite with regular Portsmouth to Caen passengers over more than two decades of service.

Built at the Van der Giessen de Noord shipyard in the Netherlands, she made her maiden voyage in December 2002 and carries up to 2,200 passengers โ€” significantly more than her newer running partner the Guillaume de Normandie. With over two kilometres of vehicle space and room for more than 800 cars, she is one of the largest and best-equipped cruise ferries on the English Channel.

Compared to the Guillaume de Normandie, the Mont Saint Michel is larger and carries more passengers and vehicles, but her cabin range is smaller and she does not have pet-friendly cabins, kennels, Couchette Plus berths or a CClub Lounge. Passengers travelling with pets must plan for their animal to remain in the vehicle for the entire crossing. She does however offer a generous range of reserved lounge seats across five separate lounges on deck 7 โ€” one of the best alternatives to a cabin on the channel.

๐Ÿ’ก Deck plan tips โ€” choosing your cabin or seat location:

  • Seasickness: Deck 7 is the lowest passenger deck and the most stable โ€” lower and midship means least motion in rough seas.
  • Closest to dining: Deck 8 puts you steps from both restaurants. Deck 9 is adjacent to the Blue Note Bar and Le Cafรฉ du Festival.
  • Reserved seats: All five reserved seat lounges are on deck 7. A good option for daytime crossings or if you want to avoid the cost of a cabin.
  • Sun deck: Sun decks on decks 8, 9 and 10. Deck 10 has Games Planet for teenagers.
  • Cabin numbers: The first digit tells you your deck. All cabins are on deck 7 or deck 9.

Mont Saint Michel Cabins & Reserved Seats

On overnight sailings a cabin or reserved seat is compulsory โ€” the vehicle deck is sealed for the entire crossing. On daytime sailings, both are available at reduced rates. All 224 cabins are en-suite and air-conditioned.

๐Ÿ”Œ Important โ€” sockets: Cabin sockets on the Mont Saint Michel are continental 2-pin only (220v) plus a shaving socket (110v). UK passengers will need a travel adaptor for standard 3-pin plugs. This differs from the Guillaume de Normandie, which has UK, EU and USB sockets in every cabin. Adaptors may be available to purchase at the boutique on board.

๐Ÿ‘‘ 4-berth Commodore

Twin beds, window, TV & DVD player, complimentary continental breakfast or hot drinks served in your cabin, en-suite. The most premium cabin on the Mont Saint Michel.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ 4-berth Outside

Bunk-style beds, porthole, en-suite. Comfortable and good value for parties of up to four.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ 4-berth Inside

Bunk-style beds, en-suite, no window. Privacy and value without the premium of an outside cabin.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ 2-berth Inside

Bunk-style beds, en-suite, no window. A compact, practical option for two passengers.

โ™ฟ Wheelchair Accessible (ร—3)

2-berth inside, twin beds, en-suite adapted bathroom with washbasin, toilet and shower, alarm and telephone. Located on deck 7. Early booking essential โ€” availability is limited.

๐Ÿ’บ Reserved Lounge Seats

419 reclining seats across 5 lounges on deck 7. A comfortable, more affordable alternative to a cabin โ€” popular on daytime crossings.

Full Cabin Guide โ†’

Reserved Seat Lounges โ€” Deck 7

The Mont Saint Michel has five separate reserved seat lounges on deck 7, each with reclining seats and their own designated seating area. Sleep packs can be purchased on board for overnight crossings.

Lounge Seat Numbers
Reserved Seat Lounge 1 1โ€“124
Reserved Seat Lounge 2 201โ€“272
Reserved Seat Lounge 3 301โ€“372
Reserved Seat Lounge 4 401โ€“476
Reserved Seat Lounge 5 501โ€“576

Cots (infants up to 24 months):

Cots can be pre-booked for infants up to 24 months โ€” select the infant passenger option when booking. The cot will be made up and waiting in your cabin.

โณ Book early: Commodore cabins and wheelchair-accessible cabins sell out first. On overnight sailings, accommodation or reserved seats are compulsory โ€” book yours at the same time as your crossing. Vacate your cabin 30 minutes before arrival.

Priority Disembarkation

Priority Disembarkation lets vehicle passengers be among the first off the ship โ€” saving time in the garage, bypassing the queue of vehicles, and getting you to Border Control and onto the road faster. The Priority Disembarkation Addon is ยฃ15.

Priority Disembarkation is not available to passengers travelling with pets, requiring special assistance, or with reduced mobility (including those needing lift access). Motorcycles are not eligible. From 2 November 2026, the service becomes more flexible โ€” available across more departures and vehicle types without requiring a premium cabin, though spaces remain limited and booking early is recommended.

Dining on the Mont Saint Michel

The Mont Saint Michel has two restaurants and a cafรฉ, all on decks 8 and 9. All restaurants serve children’s menus. Payment can be made in Euros or Sterling, cash or card.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Les Romantiques

ร€ la carte restaurant | Deck 8, aft | Seasonal menu

The main ร  la carte restaurant, situated at the rear of the ship on deck 8. Seasonal menus are prepared using produce from regional suppliers, accompanied by a carefully chosen French wine list. Note: Les Romantiques is closed during the winter period โ€” La Galerie self-service remains open year-round.

๐Ÿด La Galerie

Self-service restaurant | Deck 8 | Open year-round

A large self-service dining area with a wide choice of French and international dishes โ€” minute steaks cooked to order on the spot, a salad buffet, hot dishes, desserts, wines and beers. Open throughout the year, including during winter crossings when Les Romantiques is closed.

โ˜• Le Cafรฉ du Festival

Cafรฉ | Deck 9 | Sun deck access, soft play area

Sandwiches, cakes, pastries and hot and cold drinks. Adjoins the sun deck, so you can take your coffee outside on a fine day. The children’s soft play area is located next to the cafรฉ, making it a natural base for families with young children.

๐Ÿท Good to know: Restaurant opening times vary throughout the year and adjust per sailing โ€” check on board once you’ve sailed. A Food Pass (pre-purchased before travel) gives 5โ€“15% extra credit across all restaurants and cafรฉs.

Flat-screen TVs show live sport and news. An ATM is located near the stairs inside the bar.

Two cinemas with comfortable seating and surround sound on deck 7. All films in English with no subtitles. Tickets from the Information Desk, 15 minutes after departure. Admission: Adults โ‚ฌ9.00 ยท Children (under 12) โ‚ฌ7.50 ยท Family (2 adults + 2 children, U/PG films only) โ‚ฌ30.00. Note: cinemas are not wheelchair accessible.

๐ŸŽฎ Games Planet & Video Games

Decks 8 & 10 | Latest consoles

Video games on both decks 8 and 10, with the main Games Planet room on deck 10 โ€” ideal for teenagers. Whatever the weather, there’s a games option inside the ship.

๐Ÿ‘ง Children’s Playroom

Deck 9 | Peak season entertainment programme

A dedicated playroom for younger children on deck 9, next to Le Cafรฉ du Festival and the children’s soft play area. During peak season, a special entertainment programme runs โ€” treasure hunts, games and activities. Children must be supervised at all times.

๐Ÿป Pierre le Bear & Live Entertainment

School holidays | Blue Note Bar

Pierre le Bear makes appearances on board, particularly during school holidays โ€” games, songs and an opportunity for a photo. In the Blue Note Bar, entertainment includes interactive quizzes, vocal acts from ship’s singers, and the occasional silent disco. Collect the entertainment programme from the Information Desk on deck 7.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Boutique (Les Boutiques)

Decks 7 & 8 | Duty-free

Duty-free shopping across two boutiques on decks 7 and 8 โ€” spirits, wines, tobacco, perfumes, cosmetics, leather goods, confectionery, toys, fashion, souvenirs, newspapers, games, cameras, sunglasses and jewellery. Wines, spirits and tobacco cannot be purchased within UK territorial waters.

Onboard Facilities Guide โ†’

Wi-Fi on the Mont Saint Michel

The Mont Saint Michel has satellite Wi-Fi throughout the ship. Look for the network named ‘Brittany Ferries Connected’ and connect to that one only โ€” the first hour is free, with paid packages available if you need longer.

Best signal: deck 7 near the boutique, deck 8 around the restaurant areas and Le Kiosk, and deck 9 close to Le Cafรฉ du Festival and the Blue Note Bar.

Package Price Duration Devices Best for
Surf Free Free 1 hour 1 Checking email, quick messages
Surf Small โ‚ฌ3.50 1 hour (pausable) 1 Light browsing on the go
Surf Medium โ‚ฌ9.00 3 hours (pausable) 2 Scrolling social media over a longer sitting
Surf One Way โ‚ฌ15.00 Whole sailing 2 Streaming or heavier data use

โš ๏ธ Switch off mobile data roaming before you board. Out in the Channel, your phone can latch onto an offshore maritime network that charges well above your normal UK rates. Stick to the ship’s ‘Brittany Ferries Connected’ Wi-Fi instead. If you’re a Club Voyage member, ask at the Information Desk before buying โ€” you get 50% off the Surf One Way package.

Travelling with Pets on the Mont Saint Michel

โš ๏ธ Important: pets on the Mont Saint Michel must remain in your vehicle for the duration of the crossing. Unlike the Guillaume de Normandie, the Mont Saint Michel has no pet-friendly cabins and no kennels. Your pet travels in your car on the garage deck throughout the sailing. On daytime crossings you may visit your pet in the vehicle with a badge from the Information Desk โ€” but no visits are permitted on overnight sailings.

๐Ÿš— Pets Stay in the Vehicle

Your pet travels on the garage deck in your vehicle for the entire crossing. Open a window slightly for ventilation and leave water. The vehicle deck temperature is carefully regulated once the ship is at sea.

๐ŸŽซ Visiting Your Pet (Day Crossings Only)

On daytime crossings, you can visit your pet with a badge from the Information Desk โ€” present your passport or driving licence (held as security during the visit). One person per vehicle, maximum 15 minutes. All visits subject to weather conditions. No visits permitted on overnight sailings.

๐Ÿ• Key Pet Rules

Dogs must be muzzled at all times when outside your vehicle. Pets are not permitted in any passenger lounges, public spaces or cabins (except registered assistance dogs). Access to the garage decks is forbidden during the crossing except with a crew escort for visits.

If you are travelling with a pet and would prefer a cabin for your animal on the crossing, the Guillaume de Normandie has 21 pet-friendly cabins and onboard kennels โ€” check which ship is operating your sailing at the time of booking.

Mont Saint Michel Ferry โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mont Saint Michel ferry?

The Mont Saint Michel is a Brittany Ferries cruise ferry operating on the Portsmouth to Caen (Ouistreham) route alongside the Guillaume de Normandie. Built at the Van der Giessen de Noord shipyard in the Netherlands and launched in December 2002, she carries up to 2,200 passengers and 800+ cars across 224 cabins. She is named after the famous tidal island on the Normandy-Brittany border and is one of the largest cruise ferries operating on the English Channel.

Is there a deck plan for the Mont Saint Michel?

Yes โ€” the full deck plan images are shown above, with a deck-by-deck breakdown table alongside them. In summary: deck 10 has Games Planet and the aft sun deck; deck 9 has the Blue Note Bar, Le Cafรฉ du Festival, children’s playroom, baby change and cabins (9001โ€“9616); deck 8 has Les Romantiques, La Galerie, Le Kiosk, La Vitrine and video games; deck 7 has all main cabins (7001โ€“7916), the boutique, two cinemas, five reserved seat lounges, the Information Desk, baggage room and showers. Cabins are only on decks 7 and 9 โ€” the first digit of your cabin number tells you which deck you’re on.

Can I take my pet on the Mont Saint Michel?

Yes, but pets on the Mont Saint Michel must remain in your vehicle for the entire crossing โ€” there are no pet-friendly cabins and no kennels on this ship. On daytime crossings you can visit your pet in the vehicle with a badge from the Information Desk (one person, 15 minutes maximum; present your passport or driving licence). No visits are permitted on overnight sailings. Dogs must be muzzled at all times outside the vehicle. If you need a cabin for your pet, the Guillaume de Normandie has 21 pet-friendly cabins and onboard kennels โ€” check which ship is on your sailing before booking.

What are the cabin options on the Mont Saint Michel?

The Mont Saint Michel has 224 cabins in four main grades: 4-berth Commodore (twin beds, window, TV/DVD, complimentary breakfast or hot drinks โ€” 8 cabins), 4-berth outside (bunk-style, porthole, en-suite โ€” 68 cabins), 4-berth inside (bunk-style, en-suite, no window โ€” 105 cabins), and 2-berth inside (bunk-style, en-suite โ€” 40 cabins). There are also 3 wheelchair-accessible 2-berth inside cabins on deck 7 โ€” early booking is essential as availability is very limited. All cabins have continental 2-pin sockets; a UK travel adaptor is needed.

What are reserved lounge seats on the Mont Saint Michel?

The Mont Saint Michel has 419 reclining reserved seats across five separate lounges on deck 7 โ€” a comfortable and more affordable alternative to a cabin. Your assigned lounge and seat number are on your boarding card. Lounge 1 has seats 1โ€“124; Lounge 2, seats 201โ€“272; Lounge 3, seats 301โ€“372; Lounge 4, seats 401โ€“476; Lounge 5, seats 501โ€“576. Sleep packs (pillow, blanket, eye mask) can be purchased on board for overnight crossings.

Does the Mont Saint Michel have UK plug sockets?

No โ€” cabin sockets are continental 2-pin (220v) plus a shaving socket (110v). UK passengers need a travel adaptor. This differs from the Guillaume de Normandie, which has UK 3-pin, EU 2-pin and USB sockets in every cabin. Adaptors may be available from the boutique on board.

How does the Mont Saint Michel compare to the Guillaume de Normandie?

The Mont Saint Michel is the older ship (2002 vs 2025) but carries more passengers (2,200 vs 1,310) and more cars (800+ vs 470). The Guillaume de Normandie is newer and has several features the Mont Saint Michel does not: UK/EU/USB sockets, pet-friendly cabins and kennels, Couchette Plus berths, a CClub Lounge, and allergy-friendly cabins. The Mont Saint Michel has the larger Blue Note Bar with live entertainment, 5 reserved seat lounges, and cinema ticket prices per sailing. Both ships offer Priority Disembarkation โ€” on both ships it’s available to all vehicles from ยฃ15 each way. From 2 November 2026, Priority Disembarkation becomes available more widely on both ships without requiring a premium cabin. Your booking confirmation shows which ship you are sailing on.

Is there a cinema on the Mont Saint Michel?

Yes โ€” two cinemas on deck 7, both with comfortable seating and surround sound. All films are in English with no subtitles. Tickets are available at the Information Desk 15 minutes after departure. Prices: Adults โ‚ฌ9.00, Children (under 12) โ‚ฌ7.50, Family ticket (2 adults + 2 children, U or PG films only) โ‚ฌ30.00. Note: the cinemas are not wheelchair accessible.

Does the Mont Saint Michel offer Priority Disembarkation?

Yes โ€” Priority Disembarkation is available as an exclusive optional benefit for passengers, letting you be among the first off the ship. It is not available to passengers travelling with pets, requiring special assistance, or with reduced mobility, and motorcycles are not eligible. Your required check-in time will be shown on your ticket. From 2 November 2026, the service becomes more flexible โ€” available across more departures and vehicle types, though spaces remain limited and booking early is recommended.

There are three wheelchair-accessible cabins on deck 7, all shown in orange on the accessible deck plan above. Where are the accessible toilets on the Mont Saint Michel?

Accessible toilets are on deck 7 (starboard side, aft near the cinemas) and deck 8 (port side, midship near the boutiques) โ€” both marked on the accessible deck plan above.
